Most UPCAT advice is a list of topics. That is the easy part, and it is also the least useful part, because knowing what to study tells you nothing about how to study it. Two applicants can cover identical material and walk out with very different results, and the difference is usually method rather than effort.
This article is about method. It is opinionated, because the evidence on how people actually learn is reasonably settled, and most of what students instinctively do runs against it.
Three principles that do the heavy lifting
1. Spread the work out
The same total study hours produce markedly better retention when distributed across weeks than when concentrated into a few marathon sessions. This is not a motivational platitude; it is one of the most robust findings in the study of memory.
The mechanism matters, because understanding it changes behaviour. Memories formed during the day begin as fragile traces and are gradually stabilised into more durable form over subsequent nights of sleep. Sleep is not the gap between periods of learning. It is one of the periods of learning, and the one during which the sorting actually happens.
2. Test yourself instead of rereading
Rereading notes feels productive because the material becomes familiar, and familiarity is easily mistaken for knowledge. Retrieving an answer from memory feels harder and less pleasant, and it is substantially more effective.
This is why our practice pages and quiz mode are different tools rather than duplicates. Reading a worked answer is how you learn something the first time or diagnose a misunderstanding. Quiz mode hides the answer until you commit, which forces retrieval. Once you think you know a topic, stop reading about it and start being tested on it.
It is also why our quiz reshuffles the options on every attempt. Repeating a fixed question set in a fixed order teaches you the *position* of the right answer rather than the reasoning behind it, and position memory transfers to nothing.
3. Follow your mistakes, not your comfort
Left to instinct, people revise what they are already good at, because it is pleasant and produces a satisfying run of correct answers. The marks you are losing, by definition, are in the other pile.
Keep an error log. A notebook is fine. For every question you get wrong, write the topic and, more importantly, *why* you got it wrong. The categories tend to be:
- I did not know the content. Go and learn it.
- I knew it but misread the question. A comprehension and pacing problem, not a knowledge problem.
- I knew it but made an arithmetic slip. A fluency problem that responds to drilling.
- I guessed and got lucky, or guessed and did not. Mark these too, because a lucky guess hides a gap.
After two weeks of logging, patterns emerge that no generic study guide could have told you. Most applicants discover their losses are concentrated in far fewer areas than they assumed.
If you have six months or more
This is the comfortable case, and the temptation is to do nothing for five of those months. Resist it, but also do not over-plan.
- Weeks 1-2: diagnose. Work through a mixed set across all four subtests without revising first. The point is not the score, it is finding out where you actually stand. Log everything you get wrong.
- Weeks 3-16: rotate topics. Pick two or three topics a week from your weakest areas. Short sessions, four or five days a week, beat long weekend blocks. Include Filipino from the start rather than deferring it.
- Weeks 17-20: build endurance. Begin doing longer combined sessions. This is where you find out that your accuracy drops in hour three.
- Final 4 weeks: consolidate. Full-length timed practice, reviewing errors thoroughly after each. Stop introducing new material in the last fortnight; you are now sharpening what you have.
If you have six weeks
Tighter, and the strategy has to change. With limited time, breadth beats depth: you are hunting for cheap marks rather than mastering everything.
- Week 1 — diagnostic across all four subtests. Be ruthless about identifying your two weakest areas.
- Weeks 2-4 — concentrate on those two, but keep a short daily touch on everything else so nothing goes cold. Twenty minutes of mathematics daily beats three hours on a Sunday.
- Week 5 — two or three full-length timed sessions, with proper error review after each.
- Week 6 — light review of your error log only. Sleep properly. Do not introduce anything new.
Notice that the last week involves less work, not more. This is deliberate and it is the hardest part of the plan to follow.
Tactics that are specific to each subtest
Language Proficiency
Grammar rules are finite and learnable, which makes this the most efficiently improvable subtest. Learn the rule explicitly rather than relying on what sounds right, because under time pressure your ear becomes unreliable. The *ng* against *nang* distinction, the *din* against *rin* rule, subject-verb agreement across an intervening phrase: these are a handful of rules that recur endlessly.
For vocabulary, read rather than memorise lists. Words learned in context stick, and vocabulary items on the exam are almost always context-dependent.
Reading Comprehension
Practise pointing at your evidence. For every answer you choose, identify the specific sentence that justifies it. If you cannot find one, you are answering from prior knowledge or plausibility, which is the single commonest way to lose marks in this subtest.
And read Filipino prose deliberately. Editorials, essays, literary excerpts. Fluency in conversation is not the same as speed and precision on the page, and this subtest tests the latter.
Science
Aim for mechanisms rather than facts. If you know that ice melting is a physical change but cannot say why rusting is not, you will fail any question phrased slightly differently from the one you memorised. Ask yourself *why* after every fact you learn.
Mathematics
Frequency beats duration. Computational fluency decays quickly, and no calculator is permitted, so mental arithmetic needs to be genuinely current. Fifteen to twenty minutes daily is worth more than a long weekly block.
Work by hand from the start. Practising on a phone calculator and then sitting a paper exam without one is a specific and avoidable shock.
Where and how you study
The physical setup gets ignored in most study advice, which is odd, because it is the easiest variable to change.
- Practise without a phone within reach. Not on silent, not face-down. In another room. The exam prohibits phones entirely, so practising with one nearby rehearses conditions that will not exist.
- Work at a desk, not on a bed. Posture affects alertness over a long session, and you will be sitting upright for about five hours on the day.
- Practise by hand. No calculator is allowed, so every sum in your revision should be done on paper.
- Use a timer even for short sets. Untimed practice teaches accuracy without teaching pace, and pace is half the challenge.
Studying with other people
Group study is genuinely useful for one specific thing: explaining a concept aloud to someone else exposes gaps that silent rereading conceals. If you cannot explain why the answer is what it is, you do not yet know it.
It is much less useful as a substitute for solitary retrieval practice, and it collapses entirely when it becomes a comparison exercise. Comparing scores generates anxiety without information. Trade explanations, not results.
What not to bother with
- Highlighting. It creates a colourful page and almost no retention. Write questions in the margin instead.
- Copying notes out neatly. Transcription is not learning. It feels like work and functions as procrastination.
- Hunting for leaked papers. Nothing genuine is in circulation, and time spent searching is time not spent practising. Anything sold as a real past UPCAT paper should be treated as a red flag about the seller.
- Reviewers that give answers without explanations. A bare answer key tells you that you were wrong and nothing about why. The explanation is the entire educational content.
- Chasing a target score. You cannot see your own scaled score in advance, and the cut-off depends on the campus and programme you chose and on the field you are competing against. Focus on error rate, which you can actually measure.
The part that is not about studying
The exam runs about five hours. Physical state is not a soft consideration here; it is a performance variable on the same footing as content knowledge.
Sleep in the week before matters more than the session you would sacrifice to get it. Eat before the test. Bring snacks, since you are permitted to. And do at least one long practice session in advance so that hour-four fatigue is a familiar sensation rather than a frightening one.
It is also worth saying plainly: the UPCAT is one route into one university system, and not getting in is not a verdict on your worth or your future. Applicants who hold that perspective tend, somewhat unfairly, to perform better than those who treat the morning as an existential test.
